Victorian House with Large Garden in a Unique Location

4 Bedrooms - Stream Boundary - Ample Parking

Front garden This is an opportunity to get on the list to be first to view when this unique house is put on the market later in the year. The house is circa 1860, built of stone, in about an acre of ground with a stream boundary - within the village, yet quite isolated from it. It was last on the market in 1983.

When we viewed it, our reaction was the same as most people coming to it for the first time. "What a beautiful secret garden". Many preserved features - a Victorian verandah, stained glass front door panels (recently restored), all original internal pine doors and casement windows, 1860s tiled fireplace and grate (works well too!).

The house is sustantially built with walls 3ft thick, so throw away your domestic hammer drill and buy an industrial one (seriously!). The roof was re-slated just before we bought it and we have done our best to conserve the structure by renewing things like gutters, wiring and central heating.

Some years ago we converted the stone "lean-to" into a utility room and second toilet/shower room. We also completely "gutted" the kitchen and bathroom, starting afresh from floor to ceiling. Centrally heated throughout.

Price & Availability

I am not yet ready to sell, simply because I have not found a property to move to. Hence the concept of an "enquiry" list for people not in any particular hurry. The house is not listed by an Estate Agents for the simple reason that I have not chosen one!

Price? Again, not decided, but it will not be a "bargain", for my aim is to get as much as the current market will allow. Overvalued? Yes, that's what the Bank manager told is in 1983 when we paid 33k for it! It is all about position. You can get a very nice modern detached house or bungalow in a small plot for a lot less. What you don't get on a modern development is an acre of ground, a stream boundary (a good 40 foot lower than the level of the house, so no risk of flooding) and isolation from your neighbours.

It all depends on what you want from where you live. We are hidden away, yet not remote, which is what usually happens if you want seclusion. It does mean you can have a party or turn the hi-fi up as loud as you like without fear of disturbing anyone. Having lived "cheek by jowel" in suburbia, we put a premium on this. You may - in which case our house should be of interest. If you don't, please don't become a "time waster" - just go and look elsewhere - there is, after all, plenty of choice!

I will be putting up lots of pictures so you can get a good idea of the property and surrounding area before you visit us.

More about the Area

To be put on the viewing list, please contact me via email please

Remember it may be May or June before I put it on the market as I have to find something in this area to be near our family and I haven't really seen anything yet (In retirement, since my wife died, I am looking for a smaller garden).

With a house in a position as unique as this, I am certain that if you value what we did - Seclusion - Garden - Period Features - Proximity to open countryside & river walks (2 minutes away) then you will be delighted you joined my viewing list. If a modern "bijou bungalette" is really what you want, please don't bother to waste your time and ours by putting your name on the list! I will operate the viewing strictly in order of emails received - going through the list of people in turn until somebody agrees with me that it is their "perfect house"

Over confident? You would be too, if you knew what people from all walks of life thought of the house and garden. Typical delivery driver's comment last week: "What a fantastic position"
